What Is MAPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Palatal Expansion)?

Miniscrew-Assisted Palatal Expansion (MAPE) is used to widen a narrow upper jaw through skeletal expansion rather than simply moving the teeth outwards. It may be recommended where there is crowding, a crossbite or insufficient bone around the outside of the teeth to achieve the required width safely through tooth movement alone.

How MAPE Works

A fixed expansion appliance sits in the palate and is supported by small screws known as TADs. The appliance is activated gradually according to a personalised turning schedule. As expansion occurs, a temporary gap commonly appears between the upper front teeth. This is expected and can be closed during the later alignment phase. Once expansion is complete, the appliance may remain in place for approximately 6-8 months while the result stabilises.

What to Expect During Treatment

Eating, swallowing and speech may feel different initially, and pressure or tenderness can occur during activation. Cleaning carefully around the appliance and TADs is particularly important.
